Okay, I have to blog about this. What is with the stick figure family decals I keep seeing on cars lately?
When I saw one for the first time, I thought, “Weird. Not sure why you would want everyone to know you have a wife, kid and dog. But sure.” Definitely thought they were strange, but didn’t really pay much attention to them. Then these stick figure families became more and more common.
You started seeing stickers of less traditional families like the single mom, a woman with a dog, or the crazy cat lady.
It seems nowadays you can get a stick family decal for just about anything – lesbian moms, a cheating dad, and desperate singles with “position open” signs.
The more popular these stickers became, the more people tried to be funny with them. Apparently, you can go online and customize your family sticker to your personal preference.
Even though people have the option to order customized family stickers online, I still see the traditional family stick figures more than anything else. The typical mom, dad, kids and pets. Some stickers have individual names for each member; others just say “the Wilsons,” “the Thompsons,”… “the Narcissists” or whatever.
My question is, why? Why do people feel the need to tell others they have a wife, kid and dog? Why would a woman want to announce that she’s unmarried with 15 cats?
It doesn’t make your minivan look cute, because – this just in – if you’re a terrible driver, the smiley faces on your car won’t make us okay with your shitty parking or rude driving habits. The moment you cut us off, we’re thinking:
And these stickers are usually on minivans, SUVs or some other family-sized vehicle. Come on. Let’s think about this. If you drive a minivan, are the stickers really necessary?
While I was looking online for inspiration to write this rant, I thought if I ever had to get a family sticker on my car, I’d probably order something like this:
