That’s right. This is our elopement announcement!
I can hear my friends reading this and saying, “That’s so Jo!” And they’re right. This elopement announcement screams “We’re married, y’all.”
On April 4, 2013 Craig and I tied the knot in a VERY intimate elopement ceremony in Costa Rica. We’re staying at the luxurious Riu Palace Costa Rica with my best friend and her boyfriend. The 7-day getaway was planned as a fun week-long party to celebrate our already committed union.
Elopement announcements are hard to make. Do you phone everybody one-by-one and share the news? Do you plan a get-together with everyone to announce your elopement all at once? We have too many friends and family located all over the place that we thought it would be easier to post our elopement announcement on my blog. Surprise!
Some of you are probably dying to hear the story. When did we decide to elope? Why did we choose Costa Rica? Why did we keep it a secret? Read the rest of our elopement announcement and all of these questions will get answered.
When did we decide to elope?
My close friends know I’m NOT the marrying type. In fact, I never wanted to get married at all until I met Craig. After we got engaged, we just enjoyed being engaged. We didn’t make any wedding plans for the longest time. Whenever people asked if we had set a date yet, we responded with an awkward shrug.
When we finally started planning a small local wedding, I got really stressed out. It was impossible to plan a small wedding with so many family and friends. Very quickly, our small 20-person guest list turned into 65, then 70, and more. As the guest list grew, so did the wedding costs. So we just said, “Screw it all. We’re eloping!”
Read my post about why I decided not to have a wedding.
Why did we choose Costa Rica?
Most destination weddings I hear about are in Cancun, Riviera Maya, other parts of Mexico or destinations in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or Cuba. We didn’t want our elopement to be in a “typical” destination, so we explored places like Aruba, St. Maarten, Panama and Costa Rica. We landed on Costa Rica simply for its lush surroundings, mountainous landscape and of course the new 5-star Riu Palace resort that opened in late 2012.
Why did we keep it a secret?
Frankly, we kept our lips sealed so people wouldn’t follow us down there! We wanted an intimate elopement ceremony where we could be ourselves (goofy and drunk) without the pressures of entertaining others and making sure they were enjoying themselves. Plus, what’s an elopement unless it’s a secret, right?
How did we plan our elopement?
That’s easy. We booked an elopement package with the resort, and everything else was easy as pie. With the wedding coordinator taking care of all the details, I barely had to lift a finger. The most “planning” we had to do was picking the destination, choosing the resort, setting a date, booking our travel, purchasing the elopement package and sourcing the photographer. We completed all this within a week or two of deciding to elope.
Since I’m posting this while in destination, when we get back I’ll write a follow-up post about “how to plan an elopement” and I’ll go into some more details about how we went about planning ours.
Why did we announce our elopement on my blog?
It’s simple; it’s social and it’s so us! This is the perfect elopement announcement for a pair of lunatics like us. We’ve always been an unconventional couple defying all things traditional in every scandalous way possible. So we decided to tell everyone “We’re married, y’all” on my blog for the world to read.
